Commuting to Skövde sparked Peter Fogel’s imagination. He began taking photographs through the train window. Six years later, the photographs are being exhibited at the University Library in a new exhibition.
Peter Fogel, IT teacher, began photographing from the train window in autumn 2019 when he started his position at the University of Skövde. As he lives in Örebro, he spends several hours on the train each day. Inspired by the beautiful views outside the window, he came up with the idea of capturing the moments.
“But the conditions are not really that favourable — the train is moving, and there’s a reflective window between the camera and the subject. But the movement becomes part of what I capture,” he explains.
Peter is drawn to the abstract because it doesn’t depict anything exact, leaving the viewer to fill in the content themselves.
“Photography encompasses so many genres, from documentary representation to the abstract. I’m curious about most things related to photography, but in this series, the images are predominantly abstract,” says Peter.
The photographs were taken with both a mobile phone and a system camera. Minor adjustments were made in Photoshop, but overall, the images are unedited and the colours are authentic — except for the photograph taken on the train platform.
Always creative
Peter has always had an interest in photography, but also in other forms of expression such as music and various crafts.
“I’ve always done something creative. There’s something about being in that focused bubble of creation. It’s a kind of dialogue between the circumstances and your own ambitions and abilities.”
Going forward, Peter wants to further develop the abstract expression, but also challenge himself with spontaneous encounters in town for portrait photography.
