Fewer books in Legimus – risk that course literature will be unavailable in the autumn semester

The Swedish Agency for Accessible Media (MTM), which is responsible for Legimus, will no longer produce all course books as audiobooks. They have also removed some books that were previously available in Legimus. This means that, if you use Legimus, you may find that some books are unavailable.

This is not a decision made by the library but by MTM. MTM states that the reason is that the new accessibility legislation will result in more accessible e-books being available, and MTM will therefore not produce books if there is a commercially available accessible e-book.

Due to pricing and licensing terms, the library is unable to purchase all course books as e-books. We hope that we will find solutions in the future, but at present this means that some books are available neither as accessible e-books through the library nor as audiobooks.

For you as a student, this means:

  • The library can no longer order audiobook recordings of all your compulsory course books if there is a commercially available accessible e-book.
  • Some books that were previously available in Legimus are no longer available. The library do not have complete information about which titles are affected, but many reading lists are at risk of being affected.
  • More books may be removed from Legimus in the future.
  • You will probably need to read more e-books on different platforms instead of having everything collected in Legimus.

For the time being, the following applies:

  • Ask your teacher whether an earlier edition can be used. Earlier editions often remain available in Legimus.
  • You may need to purchase more books than before. Please note that some books are not available to purchase as e-books and can only be rented.
  • If the e-book available on the market is not sufficiently accessible for your individual needs, or if information about accessibility is unavailable, contact legimus.biblioteket@his.se
