Degrees at Second-Cycle Qualifications

The following requirements apply to degrees that are issued at Second-Cycle Qualifications at University of Skövde. Education that leads to a degree at the second cycle qualifications must mainly include courses at the second-cycle course requirements. Courses at the first cycle requirements can be included with a maximum of 15 credits at Degree of Master (6o credits) and 30 credits at Degree of Master (120 credits)

General Second-Cycle Qualifications

Degree of Master (60 credits) [Magisterexamen]

A Degree of Master (60 credits) is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 60 credits with a defined specialization determined by each higher education institution itself, of which at least 30 credits are for specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme. In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.

A requirement for the award of a Degree of Master (60 credits) is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits in the main field of study.

A Degree of Master (60 credits) at the University of Skövde is awarded in one of the established second-cycle main fields of study, see appendix: Main Field of Studies at University of Skövde in Local System of Qualifications at the University of Skövde (Registration number HS 2021/910) The following suffixes are used for Degree of Master (60 credits): ‘of Arts’ or ‘of Science’.

Degree of Master (60 credits) [Filosofie magisterexamen]

For a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) or Degree of Master of Arts (60 credits) at the University of Skövde, the student must complete second-cycle course requirements of at least 45 credits (A1N – A1E), of which at least 30 credits must be in one of the University’s main fields of study for second-cycle studies, including a degree project of at least 15 credits (A1E).

Degree of Master (60 credits) [Teknologie magisterexamen]

For a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) at the University of Skövde, the student must complete second-cycle course requirements of at least 45 credits (A1N – A1E), of which at least 30 credits must be within the main field of study Virtual Product Realization for second-cycle studies, including a degree project of at least 15 credits (A1E).

Degree of Master (120 Credits) [Masterexamen]

A Degree of Master (120 credits) is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 120 credits with a defined specialization determined by each higher education institution itself, of which at least 60 credits are for specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme. In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.

A requirement for the award of a Degree of Master (120 credits) is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 30 credits in the main field of study. The degree project may comprise less than 30 credits, however no less than 15 credits, if the student has already completed an independent project in the second cycle for at least 15 credits in the main field of study or the equivalent from a programme of study outside Sweden.

Awarding Degree of Master (120 credits) require permission from the Swedish Higher Education Authority. University of Skövde has permission to award Degree of Master (120 credits) in the following main field of study: Informatics, Systems Biology and Virtual Product Realization. For Degree of Master (120 credits), the suffixes ‘of Arts’ and ‘of Science’ are used.

Degree of Master (120 Credits) [Filosofie masterexamen]

For a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) or Degree of Master of Arts (120 credits) at the University, course requirements of at least 90 second-cycle credits (A1N – A2E), of which at least 60 credits must be in one of the University’s main fields of study for Master (120 credits) levels, including a degree project of at least 30 credits (A2E), must have been completed.

The independent project may comprise less than 30 credits, but no less than 15, if the student has already completed a second-cycle independent project (A1E) for at least 15 credits within the main field of study, or the equivalent from a from a programme of study outside Sweden.

Degree of Master (120 Credits) [Teknologie masterexamen]

For a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) at the University, course requirements of at least 90 second-cycle (A1N – A1E) credits, of which at least 60 credits must be within the main field of study Virtual Product Realization including a degree project of at least 30 credits (A2E), must have been completed.

The independent project may comprise less than 30 credits, however no less than 15 credits, if the student has already completed an independent second-cycle project (A1E) for at least 15 credits within the main field of study, or the equivalent from a programme of study outside Sweden.

Professional Second-Cycle Qualifications

Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery [Barnmorskeexamen]

A Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 90 credits. In addition the student shall have been registered by Socialstyrelsen [Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare] as a nurse.

A requirement for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project).

For a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery at the University of Skövde, course requirements must be completed in accordance with the programme syllabus “Midwifery – Study Programme 90 credits”.

Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing [Specialistsjuksköterskeexamen]

A Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing with a defined specialization is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 60 credits, with the exception of the specialization in Primary Health Care when the diploma is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 75 credits. In addition registration as a qualified nurse by Socialstyrelsen [Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare] is required.

A requirement for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project).

For specialist nursing degrees, course requirements must have been fulfilled according to the study plan for one of the University of Skövde's specialist nursing programs.
